Enhancing Safety and Community Wellbeing

As many of you will have noticed, new security cameras have been installed around The Danes. This supports an ongoing commitment to creating a safer, cleaner, and more secure environment for everyone. This initiative has been carefully planned to address real challenges faced by residents while maintaining high standards of transparency and respect for personal privacy.

Some may feel neutral or have questions about how the system will work, and this article aims to provide clear information to keep you informed.

CCTV & RESIDENT PRIVACY

A section on privacy below highlights CCTV data security, who has access to it, what it is used for, and how long the data is stored for.

The Need For CCTV: Addressing Everyday Concerns

The Danes is not immune to the pressures affecting many urban communities. Parcel theft is increasingly a common concern, with delivery drivers sometimes leaving packages outside doors. These items are easy targets for opportunists, causing financial loss, inconvenience, and a sense of vulnerability for residents. Anti-social behaviour, including vandalism, noise disturbances, and unauthorised access, can also erode the sense of community and safety that we all value.

Fly-tipping is a persistent problem at The Danes that is expensive to resolve, and eventually leads to higher rents as the cost is passed on. Unauthorised dumping of bulky waste or household rubbish in communal areas not only creates an eyesore but diminishes the quality of our shared living space. Mattresses and other unwanted items dumped in communal areas, the car park, or around the bins areas create extra work and makes our shared spaces feel less cared for. These incidents often occur outside peak hours when fewer people are around to observe them.

A well-designed CCTV system serves as both a deterrent and a valuable investigative tool. Visible cameras and prominent signage act as a clear signal that our premises are monitored, discouraging those who might otherwise engage in opportunistic crime. The presence of CCTV has been shown across many similar residential settings to significantly reduce incidents of theft, vandalism, and anti-social behaviour. When an incident does occur, footage can help management and, where necessary, relevant authorities identify those responsible to support a swift resolution to issues.

How The CCTV System Will Operate

The system at The Danes consists of high-quality, fixed and, in some locations, pan-tilt-zoom cameras strategically positioned to cover external and internal entrances, communal hallways, bin areas, and car parking zones. Internal cameras in purely private spaces, such as inside individual flats,  are not installed. Coverage is focused on shared and perimeter areas where security risks are highest.

Cameras record continuously, with footage stored securely on an encrypted, access-controlled server. Recordings are typically retained for a maximum of 30 days unless an incident requires longer retention for investigation purposes. The system operates 24 hours a day, with infrared capability for clear night-time imaging.

Prominent signage is displayed throughout the building and grounds, clearly stating that CCTV is in operation. This transparency ensures that both residents and visitors are aware of the system from the moment they enter the premises.

Management and a small number of trained, authorised staff will have access to the footage. Access is strictly logged and limited to legitimate purposes such as investigating reported incidents of theft, damage, anti-social behaviour, or fly-tipping. The system is not intended for routine monitoring of residents’ day-to-day movements.

Privacy Safeguards And Transparency Measures

The introduction of CCTV naturally raises questions about personal privacy. The Dane’s Management’s approach has been guided by core principles of necessity, proportionality, and respect for individual rights. The system has been designed to collect only the minimum amount of visual data required to achieve its security objectives.

All footage is treated as personal data. Residents have the right to request access to images of themselves, subject to appropriate verification and provided that releasing the footage does not infringe on the privacy rights of others. Such requests should be made in writing to the management team and will be handled promptly and fairly.

Access to live or recorded footage is password-protected and available only to designated personnel who have received training on data protection responsibilities. Any unauthorised access or misuse of the system would be treated as a serious matter, and immediately dealt with by The Danes Management.

The positioning of cameras has been carefully considered to avoid unnecessary intrusion into private areas. Cameras do not have a view into individual flats. The system does not record audio, further limiting the nature of the data collected.

Regular reviews of the CCTV system’s operation is made to ensure it continues to meet its stated purposes, and that privacy safeguards remain effective.

Should residents have specific concerns about camera placement or operation, the management team welcomes dialogue and will assess requests for reasonable adjustments where practicable. You may also use the contact form below to report issues.

The Broader Benefits For The Danes Community

Beyond the direct prevention of parcel theft, anti-social behaviour, and fly-tipping, CCTV contributes to a wider sense of reassurance. Many residents report feeling more confident using communal spaces when they know there is an additional layer of oversight.

Parents, older residents, and those living alone often express particular appreciation for the added sense of security. Knowing that suspicious activity can be reviewed helps reduce anxiety about personal safety and the safety of loved ones. Where remote working has increased the number of deliveries to our doors, this reassurance is especially valuable.

The reduction in fly-tipping and associated clean-up costs also helps keep service charges under control. Fewer incidents mean less frequent deep cleans of communal areas and grounds, allowing resources to be directed toward other resident priorities such as maintenance and amenity improvements.

Importantly, CCTV does not replace the most powerful element of any successful residential community: the mutual respect and vigilance of residents themselves. When everyone remains observant, reports concerns promptly, and looks out for one another, the whole community benefits. The CCTV system simply provides an additional, impartial record that supports these community efforts.

Towards A Better Quality Of Life

The installation of CCTV at The Danes represents a balanced and proportionate response to the security and environmental challenges of our residential community. It is not a surveillance measure aimed at residents but a protective tool designed to deter crime, support investigations, and enhance the overall quality of life at The Danes.

By being transparent about how the system works, who can access footage, and the strict policies governing its use, the aim is to build confidence and address any concerns proactively, creating an environment where residents feel both safe and respected in their homes.

The Danes will monitor the system’s impact over the coming months and share any key outcomes with residents through future communications. This may include an update to this web page. Resident feedback remains important, and your views can be expressed using the form below.
